Revision Rhinoplasty – Do You Need One?

If you’ve just had a rhinoplasty, you may be thrilled with your results, even before the swelling has subsided. On the other hand, you might find your nose isn’t quite living up to your pre-op expectations. So what do you do? Is it time to rush right out and book your next appointment? Could your nose be improved by another nose job? Here are some signs your nose has problems that won’t resolve themselves over time:

1. You don’t like the way your nose looks.

If you’re not happy with your results, then your rhinoplasty didn’t do its job! Remember, it’s very important for you to be confident and satisfied with your new nose. If you’re not, it may be time for a second surgery. Before you move forward, however, make sure you’re not unhappy due to unrealistic expectations about your surgery. Revision Rhinoplasty can greatly improve your appearance, but it may not be able to change your perceptions of yourself.

2. You’re having trouble breathing.

Even if you love the way your new nose looks, functionality is equally as important as aesthetics. Trouble breathing can cause discomfort, trouble sleeping, and other issues. A consultation with an ear, nose, and throat doctor can help you determine the cause of your problems, and decide on the best course of action for you.

3. Cartilage shift, dent, collapse, or other obvious problem.

If you had an implant or cartilage graft, it is possible for it to shift, causing a lumpy and unattractive look. Similarly, dents or other issues are obvious reasons for seeking a second surgery. If something doesn’t seem right, talk to your surgeon first.

Your nose needs to be examined as a whole since the nasal tip is defined by the relationship it has with the dorsum or bridge of the nose. Sometimes work needs to be done on the dorsum of the nose in order to make the tip look better. On occasion, work only is necessary on the tip.

Don’t rush into a revision!

It’s extremely important to take your time when selecting your revision rhinoplasty surgeon. It may be tempting to go back to your primary surgeon if they offer you a free or discounted surgery, but unless you are absolutely confident they are capable of fixing the issues in question, you should seek help elsewhere. Revision rhinoplasty is an extremely complex procedure, due to scarring and changes in the nasal structure, and the surgery requires a skilled and experienced hand.
